Square and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said Thursday that the payments services business is working to create an “open-source developer platform” focused on Bitcoin (BTC)-linked financial services.
The startup will be the latest Bitcoin-focused project led by Dorsey. In recent months, Dorsey has outlined his plans to develop an open-source hardware wallet and recent acquisitions, with Bitcoin playing an increasingly important role in its financial footprint through Square’s Cash App.
The new venture is led by Mike Brock, who currently serves as Strategic Development Leader for Cash App. “Like our new #Bitcoin hardware wallet, we will make it completely transparent, ” Dorsey said in his tweet thread. An open roadmap, open development, and open-source,” he wrote.
More information is coming, including through dedicated Twitter and GitHub accounts, Dorsey said.
During an event last month, Dorsey reiterated his belief that Bitcoin should ultimately become the local currency of the internet, and positioned Square’s increased use of the technology as part of that goal.
At the time, he stated, “The only reason Square got into Bitcoin was for this purpose.”
