Built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, Cupra Born is the sister model of ID.3, but it reveals its own character with its design details and the e-boost option that makes it stronger.
Cupra, which has ceased to be a unit that makes Seat models more sporty and become a brand in its own right, is here with its first fully electric model. The model, called Cupra Born , aims to meet many needs with different power and battery options.
Cupra Born design
When we look at the overall design , it is not difficult to understand that the Cupra Born is the sister model of the Volkswagen ID.3 . Watchful eyes will see the similarities between the two models, but Cupra Born has a more aggressive look compared to its sibling. The low frontal profile, muscular front hood, angry gaze headlights and a fairly large central air intake play a role in creating the Cupra Born’s own character.
At the rear of the electric Cupra Born, there is a wide spoiler and LED lights extending all the way. Wing and fins-like parts are also seen on the rear diffuser and sills, which Cupra underlines that these are not only visual but functional details in terms of aerodynamics. Born has a choice of 6 different rims ranging in size from 18 to 20 inches .
When we look at the interior, the similarity between Cupra Born and ID.3 is striking. But Cupra has managed to differentiate at this point as well. For example, the size of the multimedia screen in the center of the console is 12 inches in Born, and 10 inches in ID.3. In addition, copper-colored details are also available, while sports seats made of fully recycled material and with integrated headrests are also distinctive features.
Different power and battery options
Cupra Born, built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, has a rear-wheel drive system just like its brother. The electric motor on the rear axle produces 148 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque at the entry level. The version, which is stated to complete 0-100 km / h acceleration in 8.9 seconds, has a 45 kWh battery. This means 340 kilometers of driving range on a single charge, according to WLTP.
At the next level of Cupra Born, power output rises to 201 hp and battery capacity to 58 kWh. The torque value is the same in all versions. Thanks to the extra power available, this version completes the 0-100 km / h acceleration in 7.3 seconds. As a result of the larger battery, according to the WLTP, a driving range of 420 kilometers appears.
At this point, we can say that the most important detail that distinguishes Cupra Born from ID.3 is that it has the e-boost option that increases the power output up to 228 hp. Thanks to this performance package, the acceleration time of the electric car from 0-100 km / h is reduced to 6.6 seconds – with 58 kWh. On the other hand, the 228 hp version with e-boost function can also be preferred with a 77 kWh battery pack.
At this point, the driving range increases up to 540 kilometers, but the acceleration time again increases to 7 seconds as the effect of the extra weight. Another benefit of the large battery is fast charging support up to 125 kW. In this way, the car can be provided with a range of 100 kilometers with a charging time of around 8 minutes.
Cupra Born’s price is not yet clear. The car will hit the production line at the Volkwagen Group’s Zwickau factory in Germany in September. Its sister model ID.3 is also produced in this factory.
